- Darin held the supports in place while Lisa inserted the bit into the predrilled holes, transferring the location of the hole onto the wall.
| |
- Then, using a larger bit, Lisa enlarged the hole in the wall so that it was big enough to allow the toggle to pass through.
| |
- Lisa and Darin worked the toggle bolts through and tightened them into position on all four vertical supports.
| |
- Next Lisa and Darin set the top supports in place and secured them with screws.
| |
- It was time to attach the plywood arch to the frame.
| |
- The plywood arch was securely attached to the frame with screws making the entire structure quite strong.
| |
- Next, Darin and Lisa installed the first of five stringers that would form the framework for the interior of the arch.
| |
- They attached three more stringers to span the top of the structure.
| |
6. Add wallboard:
- Next, they covered the top of the framework with wallboard, attaching it with screws.
| |
- While Lisa was up on the ladder, Ron passed up the wallboard face panel to her. The panel was still a rectangular shape. They would cut the curve after it was secured in place. Lisa aligned the face panel so it was flush at the top. Ron held the wallboard panel in position while Lisa drove in the screws to attach it securely to the frame.
| |
- To cut the arch of the plywood into the wallboard, Ron explained that they could use a wallboard saw but Ron suggested they try something that was a little faster. Darin used a spiral-cutting saw with a self-piloting bit that would run right along the edge of the plywood.
| |
- They used dampened wallboard to cover the curved interior of the archway. They used a garden hose and sponge to apply a small amount of water to two pieces of ¼ inch thick wallboard. They wrapped the wallboard in plastic for about 10 minutes to let the moisture soak through so that the pieces became pliable.
| |
- They gently positioned the moist ¼ inch wallboard on the inside arch and held it carefully in place.
| |
- They attached the wallboard with screws into the stringers.
| |
- Next, they attached the second layer of wallboard over the first to bring the thickness up to ½ inch, which was the same as the walls.
| |
7. Finishing touches:
- Ron used a flexible plastic corner bead to protect the fragile corner edges of the wallboard and to give it the rounded look like the other corners of the home.
