How to Install an Arched Doorway, Cont'd

This flexible corner bead had been cut or curved to allow it to bend in arch, which is what they needed. Darin held one end while Ron positioned the corner bead in place to get an idea of how long it should be.

The corner bead cut easily with scissors and was held in place with ring shank nails, which went through the wallboard and into the framing.

Next, they applied joint compound with a putty knife to cover the nailing flange and blend the corner bead into the surrounding surface.

Wherever the archway met the wall they applied joint compound and then added joint tape, pressing it into the compound. The paper tape acted to reinforce the joint and keep it from cracking. After the joint compound dried it was sanded to a smooth even surface. Finally, the archway was primed, painted and complete.

RESULTS: The Hoffmans were very pleased with their handiwork and happy they had made the decision to create a wide archway. It definitely created a separation between the living room and the kitchen. The real beauty of this archway is that it blends seamlessly into the architecture as if the builder himself had put it there.
