How to Build a Cat Tree, Cont'd

Learn how to build a cat tree; includes plans, step-by-step instructions along with tips, materials, and tools lists.
  • The carpet was over the holes that had been cut out, so Ron needed to cut a hole through the carpet. He used his fingers to locate the center of the whole.

  • He used a utility knife to cut all the way through from the center to where the knife stopped at the edge of the hole. He made several pie shaped cuts or wedges, stopping at the edge of the hole and then returning back to the center for the next cut.

  • He gave each section a dab of construction adhesive.

4. PVC structure:

  • Ron had created a great place for his feline friends to curl up as well as a perfect perch, but he still needed to add a gymnastic element. He would do this with 4 pieces of PVC pipe, creating a frame that would come up from all 4 corners and meet together at the top.

  • To attach the pipe at the top, Ron had to put something into the hollow pipe. Ron mixed up some quick setting epoxy, and spread it on the inside of the pipe.

  • Ron took a piece of wooden dowel and slid it right inside.

  • The dowels provided a solid core to which he could attach a piece of sisal rope … a favorite scratching material.

  • Ron came up with a clever, timesaving way to wrap the rope around the PVC. He used his drill to spin the pipe while Jean, his guest from the Humane Society, guided the rope into place.

  • After all four pieces of PVC were covered with rope, Ron and Jean completed the final assembly to the cat tree.

  • They set the pipes in place and aligned the marks at the top.

  • By driving the screws through the plastic pipe and into the wooden dowels Ron had inserted earlier, the poles were attached firmly and securely.

RESULTS:
It was time for the moment of truth. Jean, from the humane society, let the kitties loose to give Ron's new structure a try. The cats had a grand time, which proved that Ron had truly met the challenge. The perrrrrfect kitty condo!
