- The doorframe sections came with temporary cross bar supports to hold their shape while they were transported and installed. The brace was removed once the frame was set in position.
| |
- They attached all the wall sections to the floor along the edge, but would then need to further reinforce the walls with pieces of wood along the top edge of the gazebo, called gussets. The gussets were pre-cut on an angle and attached along the top of each joint between the two wall sections. Ron laid the gusset in place and attached it to the top of the frame with screws.
| |
- With the gussets in place, they could begin with the next step: assembling the roof.
| |
4. Roof assembly:
- They began the roof assembly on the deck with the first part of the roof, the two rafters.
| |
- Like the floor support system, the rafters would also attach to a center block. Ron asked the Tillmans to lift the first two rafters up to the correct angle so he could attach to the center block with the first two screws.
| |
- They carefully flipped the first roof section over…
| |
- …and Ron first drove in a couple more screws.
| |
- Tim and Yvonne climbed the ladders and Ron handed them each side of the first roof section. It took a little maneuvering to get the first set of rafters placed squarely on the gussets.
| |
- Then they secured the rafter assembly in place.
| |
- They put up eight rafters in all, securing each one to both the gusset and the center block.
| |
5. Roofing materials:
- After the rafters were fully assembled, they set the pre-cut wedge-shaped plywood sheathing panels in position...
| |
- …and attached them with six penny galvanized nails.
| |
- Once the sheeting was installed they needed to make the roof watertight. For this, they used fifteen-pound roofing felt, and attached it to the roof starting at the bottom edge. They stapled these sheets to the plywood, overlapping each row about six inches.
| |
- Tim and Yvonne installed the metal drip cap around the edge of the roof, which would keep water from seeping into the plywood sheathing.
| |
- The first row of shingles that Ron referred to as the starter course was flipped over and attached with the topside of the shingle down.
| |
- This first row of shingles was attached along the entire edge of the roof.
