  • Ron did not put a full back on the planter box, but instead attached a strip that he would then use to attach the box to the rest of the mirror.

5. Trim strips

  • Before Ron attached the planter box, he added trim strips around the edge of the frame to cover up the edge of the backing and to also make the finished mirror more decorative. Ron cut the trim to size and then nailed the strips in place.

  • Ron's next step was to remove the backing that he had temporarily tacked on earlier. He set the backing aside, and went to work painting his new creation.

6. Attach mirror

  • After the paint was dry, it was time to place the mirror in the frame. It nestled perfectly into the recess that Ron had created earlier with the lattice strips.

  • Behind the mirror, Ron attached ¼" plywood backing. Instead of nailing the backing in place, Ron used screws. This way the backing could be easily removed if he ever needed to replace a broken or damaged mirror.

7. Finishing touches

  • For an added touch, Ron turned this plain "window" into a "divided window" by gluing on small strips of wood that he had painted earlier. Ron attached the strips with hot melt glue. He didn't want the hot glue to squish out the sides and show on the glass so he was careful to make small dots of glue on the back of the wood strips.

  • Ron carefully placed the strips in position on the glass and allowed it to dry. Finally, he added plants to the planter box, and his new window was complete!

RESULTS:

The finished mirror frame gave the appearance of a window, but it was far easier to install, could easily be moved to any wall in any room and it only needed washing on one side!

Ron was very pleased with how much more light was reflected into the room not to mention how much larger the "window" made the room appear.
