How to Choose the Right Shelf and Bracket, Continued

Learn how to choose and install shelving; includes details on shelf standards, shelf brackets and invisible shelf support systems.
  • Ron then showed Kat a variation on the first bracket. The second bracket was the same idea as the first but it had a vinyl strip that covered up the screws and made it considerably more attractive.

  • Both brackets were installed the same way and were designed to hold about the same amount of weight, but the second one, when installed looked a lot prettier. These were installed in much the same way the wall standard was installed for the first bracket.
  • After marking the holes and inserting the wall anchors, Kat installed the brackets with screws…

  • …and then put the shelves in place.

  • After installing the brackets, they attached the vinyl strip to cover up all the hardware and the screws and give a nice finished look.

  • This type of bracket could also be painted to blend with the wall. Ron also suggested that it is a good idea to run a screw up through the bracket and into the shelf to secure it in place.

3. Invisible shelf support:

  • The next shelving system Ron showed Kat was one of his favorites. He called it an invisible shelf support because it created a shelf that looked like it was floating on the wall.

  • The bracket that they attached to the wall was designed to catch the rear edge of the shelf.

  • There was no bracket coming down the wall underneath, which is why it is called the invisible shelf support.

4. Individual invisible brackets:

  • Ron described the last system he showed Kat as a baby version of the bracket that they had just put up. Instead of it being a continuous strip, the system used small, individual brackets.

  • Ron and Kat mounted the bracket on the wall. It worked much the same way as the continuous piece, except this time they installed two brackets.

  • They slipped the shelf into the brackets.

  • There was a gap between the top of the bracket and the shelf, so it did not hold tight. Ron used a screwdriver to adjust the screw underneath that would tighten the attachment by brining the bottom of the bracket up and pushing it in contact with the top.

  • This shelving system is very flexible in that you can install several brackets for a longer shelf or just two spaced closely together for a really short shelf.

  • After Ron had finished his demonstration, he couldn't resist asking Kat which one she liked the best. Although she did have a favorite, she could definitely see how each system would work best in a different situation. Ron shared a few of his favorite tools with Kat so she could go home and get straight to work.
