How to Build a Spice Rack, Continued

• Finally, they glued and nailed the back in place. The combination of both the nails and the glue ensured that the cabinet would be very sturdy.

• After all the glue was thoroughly dry, they turned the cabinet on its back and brushed more glue into the rabbets for the fixed shelf.

• They slid the fixed shelf into place…

• …and secured it with finish nails.

• They repeated the process for the two dividers and Jeff tapped them into place with the heel of his hand.

• Because the cabinet was made from plywood, the unfinished edge was not very attractive so they needed to conceal it with a face frame. They once again brushed on the wood glue and then applied 1 1/2" wide strips of oak that they had cut earlier. The result was a more substantial and more finished look.

7. Stain

• The final step before mounting the cabinet to the wall was to stain it to match the existing kitchen cabinets. They applied the stain with pads made just for this purpose. On vertical surfaces like these, the sponge applicators helped to minimize dripping and running.

8. Cabinet mounting

• To attach the spice cabinet to the wall they first located the wall stud with an electronic stud finder. Ron then drove several screws through the cabinet back and into the studs to create a strong attachment.

• The final step was to install the brackets and the adjustable shelves. The new spice cabinet was ready for stocking.
  

RESULTS:
The Coes were very pleased with their work. They had no idea that they were capable of creating something so attractive themselves. Alex and Jeff's new cabinet would hopefully provide ample space for all their spices even if they kept on bringing home more.

Whenever they use their new cabinet, they'll have the satisfaction of knowing they built it themselves. Thanks to Ron, this home improvement project was just what they needed to add a little more spice to their lives!
