- He squeezed the wings of the toggle together, put them into the hole, and pushed the bolt through.
| |
- The wings sprung open on the inside of the wall, holding the 2 X 4 in place. Ron pulled back on the 2 X 4 to keep the wings from spinning inside the wall and then used the power driver to tighten the bolt, which pulled the 2 X 4 firmly into contact with the wall.
| |
- Next they used long wood screws to attach the 2 X 4 to the wall at the bottom…

- They attached a short piece of framing to the floor…
| |
- …and then installed the final vertical piece to complete the closet framing.

3. Siding and doors
- The sides of the closet were made with ¾ inch thick medium density fiberboard (MDF). Ron had Brook and Carole position the MDF up against the framing.
| |
- Brook and Carole used nail guns to attach the MDF directly to the frames.
| |
- Next, they nailed fascia boards across the top front of the frames.
| |
- The doors they selected for the closets were attractive, raised panel doors, which they hung using a piano hinge. A piano hinge is a long strip of continuous hinge that Ron put it on at an angle so he could get it in the right position.
| |
- He began by drilling a small pilot hole using a self-centering drill bit, which protrudes from a cower or sleeve that slides back.
| |
- The self-centering bit allowed Ron to bore through the exact center of each hinge mounting hole. Carol and Brook followed behind driving in screws.
| |
- To install the door, they rested it on shims to provide the necessary floor clearance.
| |
- Ron once again used the self-centering bit and screws to attach the door and hinge to the doorframe.

4. Closet interiors
- With the exterior of the closets complete, they were ready to customize the inside. Ron used vinyl coated, stock shelves that he had picked up at the local home improvement store. To make these stiffer and able to support more weight, Ron attached a wood strip around the edges with glue and nails.
| |
- The wood strips not only strengthened the shelves, but also gave them a more substantial finished look.
