Storage Closets

Ron used a nail gun to strengthen the attachment of the wood strips to the shelves.

While Brook was working on the shelves, Ron worked on a couple of finishing touches on the closets. First, he added a wooden strip across the top of the frame to act as a doorstop.

Next, he added magnetic catches. The stop would keep the door from swinging too far inward and the catch would keep it closed.

In the interior of the closet, Ron installed shelving standards. These had metal clips that could be placed in any of the slots on the standards. This allowed for total adjustability, which is what Carole wanted.

They put the first shelf in to see if it fit. It worked perfectly, so they put in the rest of the shelves.

In the other closet, Carol installed the clothes rod rack.

5. Crown molding and paint The next step was to install what Ron called the crowning glory. A few strips of crown molding added a beautiful accent to an otherwise ordinary wall. For help installing crown molding see: Cornice Box and Crown Molding, and Crown Molding and Ceiling Medallion.

Finally, a coat of primer and then paint, and the new closets were complete.

RESULTS: Building not just one but two closets seemed like a huge undertaking. But each step turned out to be quite easy and when the project was broken down, it was really quite simple. Without using drywall, joint compound or tape, Ron and the Hoags were able to create two very attractive closets and transform a room.

Nearly everyone has the need for more closet space at one time or another, but we rarely think about the possibility of actually building a closet. While Ron's day began with a white dresser sitting against an empty wall…. ….it ended with a transformation that was every bit as attractive as it was practical.
