  • Then he switched to the smaller hole saw to cut the semicircles that would accommodate the bottle necks.

  • Ron used a drum sander installed on the drill press to smooth the edges.

  • An orbital sander was the best tool for smoothing the flat surfaces.

5. Tung oil:

  • Finally, to bring out the natural beauty of the cherry, Ron applied a couple of coats of tung oil.

  • Ron applied the oil quite liberally, and after it had been sitting for just a few minutes he wiped off the excess with a clean cloth. He recommended that you never allow tung oil to dry on the wood surface, or you will end up with something that's a little sticky.

  • At this point, Ron was completely finished with all the pieces of the wine rack that, when assembled, would be large enough to hold fifteen bottles of wine.

  • The completed rack cradled a regular wine bottle just about perfectly, but could also accommodate champagne bottles. The final result was something that was every bit as practical as it was attractive.
