With the main supports braced, you can begin attaching the miscellaneous shelf supports, to hold scanners, printers, or other commonly used components.

Next, move on to the supports for the desktop. These fittings are adjustable, so the desktop can be flat or tilted to any angle. Next, attach and tighten the supports for the speaker shelves.

Finally, attach the top spread, which also serves as the top shelf support. The framework for the computer is now complete, and ready for the shelves.

You'll be making the shelves yourself to the specifications outlined in the SketchUp design you downloaded from Simplified Building Concepts. You can either cut them from high-density particle board or from cabinet-grade plywood.

When the shelves are cut, give them a good sanding.

Then apply a coat of paint. For a high-tech office look, flat black works nicely. The shelves will be attached to the frame with metal supports that slip on and tighten in place. Go ahead and attach all of the supports where appropriate, except for the desktop. Use coarse-threaded screws and fender washers to secure the shelves to the supports.

Attaching the desktop supports Inserting plugs into pipes Attaching the monitor to a vertical pipe
Slightly different shelf supports are used for the desktop. Attach and tighten those, then use the screws to attach the desktop shelf.

These plugs snap into the open ends of the pipes to give the desk a more finished look.

Finally, attach the monitor mount, which will be supported by a vertical pipe suspended from the top spreader. You can find the mount, which is designed for vertical pipe applications like this one, online from Ultimate Office. The bracket allows the monitor to be positioned at any height and swiveled or tilted for the best view.

Placing components and swiveling a shelf Ron in front of a shelving unit Ron in front of finished computer desk
Place each of your computer components on the appropriate shelves, and you're all set! One of the great things about this system is that it's so adjustable; just about any shelf can be swiveled, raised, or lowered. Not only can this piece of furniture be adjusted for anyone's preferences, but its pieces can be reused! When it's time to build something new, all you need to do is take it apart, cut some new pipe, and you're ready to build something new, like this shelving unit. There you have it: a completed computer desk with modular pieces that can be adjusted and even re-used. This is one new toy that you'll never outgrow.
