Next, a run of PVC drain pipe runs from the basement and out to a drainage grate. Any water that's pumped out of the basement will be carried well away from the foundation and discharged through the grate, where it will run away from the house. Inside, the plastic pipe is run down to the sump, where it's connected to the discharge side of the pumps. Then the pumps are plugged in and the battery for the emergency DC pump is connected. The battery will be monitored and kept fully energized by an automatic charger. With the plumbing work complete and the pumps tested and ready for action, the grate at the bottom of the stairwell is sealed tightly with duct tape and concrete is troweled around the drain, concealing everything except the top. When the concrete is dry, remove the tape over the grate.

Any water that enters the basement through the floor will enter the drainage system first and will be directed to the sump pump. Water leaking through the walls flows downward, behind the plastic panels and into the drain. All of this water is pulled into the sump, which pumps it away from the house. The basement is now dry and looks great, too. Basement Systems has an annual maintenance program to make sure that problems are identified before they find you; in addition, the pumps have alarms that sound off in the case of problems or power loss. Whether you bring in a crew or waterproof your basement yourself, this method will ensure that you can sleep at night during the rainy and snowy months without worrying about flooding!
