Caulks and sealants can be a sticky proposition. There are a few tips for you that will take the mess out of this job and give you results that are as smooth as a pro. Messy caulk joints can be caused by putting down too much material in the first place. When trying to smooth a joint, excess sealant oozes onto the surrounding surface. Cleaning it off takes time and often leaves ridges and ragged edges.

Caulks and sealants, especially silicone, work better at room temperature. So if yours is stored in the garage or basement, bring it inside the night before and let it warm up. It will bond better and smooth more easily. It's best if you can let silicone caulk sit overnight before using it. When starting a caulk project, cut the new caulk tube nozzle at an angle, close to the tip. A smaller opening helps avoid overfilling the joint. |

Many caulk guns have a built-in tool to pierce the seal at the base of the nozzle. Choose a high-quality, no-drip gun with a smooth trigger action. |

| To test that you've cut the nozzle to the best size, tack a couple of boards together at right angles and apply a line of caulk to the corner. Hold the caulking gun at a 45-degree angle and pull it along the joint. Lift it away quickly at the end of a pass.

The real secret to get a professional looking, smooth joint is something called tooling. That's where you take your finger and draw it over the caulk you just put down. In the past, that's been a very messy job. This product called Caulk Smoother lubricates the surface, allowing one to apply enough pressure to push the caulk fully into the joint for a good seal. |
|
At the same time, the solution prevents any excess sealant from sticking to the surface or my skin. One wipe and your finger will be as clean as a whistle. |
