How to Apply Combination Weed and Feed Products
Learn how to use combination weed and feed fertilizers for the best results.Click to edit this item
Feeding the grass and controlling weeds are two components of homeowner strategy for having a great looking lawn. Dandelions may be pretty yellow flowers, but they can easily take over an entire lawn. These plants have long tap roots that make pulling them up or digging them out almost impossible. The key is to use a weed killer that enters through the leaves and circulates through the entire plant to the root. Application of a combination product to kill weeds and fertilize the lawn results in grass that is thick, dense, and healthy. Here are some recommendations for using combination products for the best results.
Step by Step Instructions with Video
Step
1
Use a Clean Dry Mechanical Spreader
Use just about any kind of spreader to apply weed and feed products. The spreader should be clean and dry so that the combination weed and feed product does not stick to the interior and blades and impede proper distribution.
Step
2
Check the Package for the Correct Application Rate
Check the back of the weed and feed bag to determine the correct application rate per square foot. All manufacturers provide detailed instructions on their packaging to explain the proper application, desirable moisture conditions, and warnings for their products. Do not assume that all products recommend the same rate.
Step
3
Set the Spreader Dial to the Recommended Amount

Dial the setting on you mechanical spreader to match the product's recommended application rate for the area that you are covering. The higher the setting, the wider the gate/opening that allows the fertilizer to flow through onto the distribution blades. Too little of the product will not make your grass live up to expectations--too much can kill the grass. Following manufacturer's directions is always the best approach.

Step
4
Control Where You Apply the Combination Product

Pour the weed and feed product into the spreader and start walking--or riding if you have a pull-behind spreader. Better quality spreaders have a very desirable feature--an edge guard that directs the fertilizer to one side or the other to prevent broadcasting it into flowerbeds or along driveways and sidewalks. Carelessly applied to flowerbeds, the products kill flowers; left on pavement, the granules absorb moisture and result in rusty brown marks that are unsightly and difficult to remove.

Step
5
Apply the Product to Wet Grass and Weeds
Apply combinations of weed and feed products when the grass is wet to ensure that the granules stick to the leaves of dandelions and other lawn weeds.
