How to Install an Attic Stairway

Learn how to install a pull-down attic stairway; includes details on stairway location, cutting and framing the opening; materials and tools lists.

4. Trim legs:

  • The rails or legs on attic ladders must be trimmed to the correct length. Lloyd and Ron measured from the upper section to the floor.

  • They transferred this measurement to the lower section.

  • Using a hand saw they carefully cut the bottom of the ladder off at an angle.

5. Finishing touches:

  • Trim molding or casing installed around the edge of the frame gave the installation a finished look.

RESULTS:
The Manguns were certainly happy with their accomplishment. It was frustrating having all of that space up above the garage and no way to access it. Now they could get to this space easily and conveniently yet with no stairs in the way when they weren't needed. Ron was pleased to hand Lloyd up his very first box to store in their new space.
