4. Closet interiors
With the exterior of the closets complete, it is time to customize the inside. Used vinyl coated, stock shelves from your local home improvement store. To make these stiffer and able to support more weight, attach a wood strip around the edges with glue and nails. The wood strips not only strengthen the shelves, but also give them a more substantial finished look. Used a nail gun to strengthen the attachment of the wood strips to the shelves.

Back inside, add a wooden strip across the top of the frame to act as a doorstop and add magnetic catches. The stop will keep the door from swinging too far inward and the catch will keep it closed.

In the interior of the closet, install shelving standards. These have metal clips that can be placed in any of the slots on the standards, which allows for total adjustability. Try a test fit on the first shelf. If everything fits, then put in the rest of the shelves.

Finally, a coat of primer and then paint, and the new closets were complete.

Building not just one but two closets seemed like a huge undertaking. But each step turned out to be quite easy and when the project was broken down, it was really quite simple. Without using drywall, joint compound or tape, Ron and the Hoags were able to create two very attractive closets and transform a room.

Nearly everyone has the need for more closet space at one time or another, but we rarely think about the possibility of actually building a closet. While Ron's day began with a white dresser sitting against an empty wall... it ended with a transformation that was every bit as attractive as it was practical.
