  • …it would prevent him from drilling too deeply into the wood.

  • They once again used the Japanese handsaw to cut the trim into short sections.

  • They dabbed a bit of glue inside each hole they had drilled into the markers and then, with a hammer, they tapped in a couple of quarter inch dowels for pegs.

  • Before the glue dried, Ron made sure the pegs were aligned properly by carefully placing the markers into several of the holes on the pegboard.

5. Paint:

  • Ron selected several colors of gloss paint to decorate the rocket. He recommended gloss because it is easy to clean and fingerprints and pen marks come right off. They painted their rocket ship with a blue base, a red nosecone, yellow on the pegboard and green trim. It took more than one coat of paint to cover the pegboard because of the dark color. Further, Ron didn't want to lay on too much paint at one time, because he didn't want to clog up the holes.

  • To ensure that the holes did not clog, Ron ran a piece of dowel through each one to clear away any excess paint.

6. Finishing touches:

  • The finished rocket ship was adorable and yet still left plenty of room for personalizing the decorating. One possibility Ron suggested was to put the actual measurements onto the rocket. The numbers could either be painted onto the chart or a cloth dressmaker's tape measure could be attached along the edge.

  • Another possibility was to add words to the nosecone. Sally suggested, "Reach for the stars."

  • The markers, of course, could be personalized too. In fact, Ron personalized one with his daughter's name, Danielle.
RESULTS:
The growth chart is a fun and creative project that can involve the whole family and leaves a lot of room for individual creativity. From paint colors to words to colorful decals, the possibilities are endless.
