How to Install an Insulated Entry Door, Continued

Learn how to install an insulated exterior door; includes details on removing the old door, installing flashing along with installation tips.

For the top trim, glue together two pieces of wood: a rectangular section and a drip cap.

The drip cap diverts water away from the door opening and prevents moisture from getting inside the frame.

Next, nail the side trim in place and then finally apply sealant around the edges and tool off the excess with your finger.

Other than a coat of paint, the outside is complete.

Before replacing the interior casing, insert fiberglass insulation around the frame.

If the original casing came off in good shape, you can reuse it. You can also reuse the flooring transition strip if you have one in good condition that was removed without damage. A good quality pry bar and patience are what make this kind of recycling possible.

One of the advantages to a high quality pre-hung door is that the hardware borings and mortises are already done for you. All you have to do is slip the lockset parts into place.

Ron's new door will work just as well in the heat of summer as in the cold of winter. And because it is insulated, he won't need to keep his storm door unless he wants to.
