3. Attach drains:

  • Jeff and Ron made coils out of plumber's putty to put around the sink's drainage openings. Ron explained that it was not important to make the putty perfect because the excess would squish out.

  • The putty is designed to create a watertight seal for the strainer baskets. Ron showed Jeff how to firmly grasp the strainer basket and press it into the putty.

  • They tilted the new sink up on its side so that they could install the hardware that would secure the baskets in place. The first basket would connect to the drain.

  • Ron first attached the rubber gasket, then a cardboard gasket and finally a retaining ring. Ron secured the retaining ring in place with a special wrench designed just for this process.

  • Next, Jeff began installing the fittings on the other side. First the rubber and cardboard gaskets as on the first side, then a base plate followed by the mounting bracket for the garbage disposal. Finally, he snapped on a retaining ring and then tightened the screws, which pulled the basket firmly into the plumber's putty.

  • After the excess putty had been squeezed out, they were able to easily remove it using their fingers.

4. Attach garbage disposal:

  • Ron recommended attaching as many things as possible to the sink before setting it back into the countertop. This included the garbage disposal.

  • With the disposal attached to the mounting bracket that Jeff had installed, the sink was heavy, but Jeff and Ron carefully lowered it through the opening in the countertop. They rested the sink's edge on two wood blocks, which kept them from pinching their fingers and allowed them to caulk the countertop.

  • Jeff supported the sink from the bottom while Ron applied the final strip of caulking. After the sink was lowered into the caulk, a second bead of caulk was applied to the outside edge where the sink met the countertop.

  • Ron suggested smoothing the caulk with a finger dipped in soapy water.

  • With the sink in place, it was time to reinstall the plumbing and make the electrical connections for the disposal. Because they moved the garbage disposal to the other side, they had to rework the drain line a bit, but soon all the connections were secure and the new sink was ready to flow.

RESULTS:

Anne's old sink was neither beautiful nor functional. She hated having the garbage disposal on the right hand side, the sink leaked and she thought it was ugly. Now, not only is her new sink very attractive, but it also works properly and the disposal is right where Anne wants it. Now that's one happy homeowner! Thanks Ron!
