Learn how to build and install porch railing; includes details on an assembly jig as well as construction tips, materials, and tools lists.
  • To avoid visible screw heads along the top rail, they toe nailed the spindles to the railing.Since a hammer would be cumbersome between the spindles, a pneumatic nail gun was the ideal tool for this job.

NOTE: Nail guns are becoming more and more affordable and are almost indispensable for many jobs.

5. Painting:

  • It was easier and less messy to paint all of the railing sections before installing them.

  • They carefully painted all of the sections and then allowed the paint to dry thoroughly before attaching the railings to the porch.

6. Attach railings:

  • Ron suggested placing a couple of temporary spacer blocks down on the deck. These were used to position the railing at the right height and provide support while the railing was installed. Because the rail was cut precisely to the right length it was a tight fit.

  • Ron had drawn a centerline on the post and one on the top rail. They aligned the two marks so the railing was exactly in the middle on both the top and the bottom.

  • Ron attached the railing to the post with finish-head screws as opposed to nails because they created a stronger bond and when attached at an angle, they were barely noticeable.

  • With Todd and Kim working together, the railing was installed in less than an hour and was ready to be enjoyed.

RESULTS:
  • The new porch railing looked beautiful from the outside looking in but Ron also expressed how much he enjoyed the feeling from the porch looking outward with the new railing.
