- Ron used a special glue bottle that is designed to slip right down inside the slots.
| |
- They dropped a biscuit into each slot.
| |
- They lined up the biscuits with the empty slots, and slipped the two pieces together.

| |
- The biscuits went right into the slots.
| |
- Ron and Lynn first attached the back…
| |
| |
- Ron attached adjustable clamps to all sides of the toy chest to hold the pieces firmly together while the glue dried, and then left it undisturbed for several hours. When they came back, they cleaned off the excess glue first before adding the lid.
| |
4. Add the lid/seat
- Ron's next step was to install two cleats to support the lid, one on each side. Ron drilled two pilot holes before attaching each cleat with glue and screws.
| |
- With the cleats in place, Ron attached a piano hinge to the lid, first by drilling clearance holes and then by driving in screws.
| |
- Ron's next step was to attach the other half of the piano hinge to the bench while Lynn helped hold it in position. It was important that Ron center the lid in the opening to make sure he allowed for clearance on each side.
| |
- Ron first drilled clearance holes through the hinge holes that would be used to attach the lid to the back with screws.
| |
- Ron magnetized a handheld screwdriver...
| |
- ...which made it easier to handle tiny screws.

| |
5. Lid support
- To make sure that the lid would not slam on any little fingers…
| |
- …Ron installed an adjustable lid support.
| |
- When tightened, the support holds the lid in an open position. Ron loosened it just enough for the lid to close on it's own, but with enough friction to slow it down considerably.

RESULTS:
Not only was this a fun project for two proud parents, but it allowed for a lot of creativity as well. The possibilities for finishing the toy chest were endless. They could first paint it, and then they could add an appliqué or stencil, or even Danielle's name. What a fun and practical addition to any child's room! |
