Ron first created the arches that would support the body portion of the wine bottles.
Then he switched to the smaller hole saw to cut the semicircles that would accommodate the bottle necks.
Ron used a drum sander installed on the drill press to smooth the edges.
An orbital sander was the best tool for smoothing the flat surfaces.
5. Tung oil:
Finally, to bring out the natural beauty of the cherry, Ron applied a couple of coats of tung oil.
Ron applied the oil quite liberally, and after it had been sitting for just a few minutes he wiped off the excess with a clean cloth. He recommended that you never allow tung oil to dry on the wood surface, or you will end up with something that's a little sticky.
At this point, Ron was completely finished with all the pieces of the wine rack that, when assembled, would be large enough to hold fifteen bottles of wine.
The completed rack cradled a regular wine bottle just about perfectly, but could also accommodate champagne bottles. The final result was something that was every bit as practical as it was attractive.
