High Tech Walls and State-of-the-Art Solar Panels

We’re used to seeing technology impact our homes when it comes to appliances, heating and cooling systems, remotely controlled devices and even lighting.  But when technology impacts wallboard and insulation, well, that’s news.  While, exploring the miles of aisles at this year’s International Builders’ Show, I came across the CertanTeed exhibit.  Here, I learned about drywall that captures and retains formaldehyde gas (common in most homes) and insulation that actually goes from porous to air tight, reacting to changes in humidity and helping to prevent mold and mildew inside walls.  I also discovered an integrated solar system that’s both roofing and an energy generator.  Take a look.

I know it’s still very much winter in many parts of the country.  However,  Punxsutawney Phil failed to see his shadow  when he recently emerged from his dwelling, thus portending an early spring.  With this in mind, I don’t feel out of place suggesting a spring cleaning and organization project.  This wall-mounted closet and organization system is easy to install, flexible and will make the most of whatever closet space you have.

Score-and-snap tile cutters can work fine for smaller, thinner ceramic tiles but not so well on larger ones.  When it comes to cutting large format tiles, Saltillo patio pavers and some porcelain tiles, the tile wet saw is what you’ll want to use.  These saws have water-cooled diamond blades and sliding tables to make tile cutting easy and accurate.  Take a look.

Results of the Handheld Cordless Drill Survey

A Bit of a Surprise
My apologies, I meant to publish these results last week.  When I poll students in my home improvement workshops, I find that many have not actually used a handheld cordless drill.  However, that's clearly not the case with those of you who responded to the survey two weeks ago.  Nearly 95% said they use the tool frequently and even those who use it infrequently are comfortable with it.  Less than 5% of those responding say they are ill at ease with a cordless drill or have never used one.
