I prefer to use dowels, about 1/2 inch dia; instead of flat boards when bringing the glued formica and table together. One, they do not touched as much glued area, and two, it is easier to remove them while presenting the two contact areas together. Since I am usually doing this by myself, I find the dowels easier to work with. I also find it easier to shift my work in case my formica top is not centered properly.
It is good that you went counter-clockwise with the hand router around the table, since going clockwise would have caused the formica to chip off as you went along.
I also like to wait to roll press the formica down to the table, working from the center outward towards the adges. Either way works OK I guess, I just find I have less a chance of bubbles getting trapped underneath.
If I plan to use formica on the edges instead of the wood as you did in this showing, it should be done first. I like the color the lady chose for her table.
