How about a double keyed dead bolt at that door has a sidelight next to the dead bolt? I'm sure there at no criminals that could visit the house. Just remember there is close to that door is a convenient window opener. Some people call it a rock. Put the key on a string near the lock inside. Do you have a glass break detector near the glass and tied to the alarm system? Just a thought.
I agree! Prime & paint BEFORE putting up, then touch up.
I installed a fiberglass front door and it has held up very well. Are there any negatives about fiberglass? Doesn't transfer the cold as well. Pretty solid.
Just a suggestion, but I think the door would add more curb appeal if it was painted a contrasting color.
Really helpful videos. These helped me a lot when I had to install a door for my garage in the backyard. All the other doors in my house were done by Landmark Home solutions in Hamilton and it is the first time I am trying to fix a door myself. I wanted to try out some DIY methods and this door is the first think that came in my hands. So thanks a lot for sharing this.
I have a Steel Door & it has been great for 35 years. It is still working fine. I have repainted several times & a Added new technology keyless entry hardware but I really wanted to upgrade the style with something sofisticated. I found the door I wanted but was told It would involve removing all the casings? & moldings around it. Since I had just repainted the house I did not want to tear it up. Guess it will have to wait :(
Great video but is there something different that needs to be completed if the house is brick?
Good Job you need to come by my house.
I was wondering the same thing... Painting them prior to installing them, would get ALL edges covered and protected, not just the surfaces that show, leading to a much better over-all job of it.
How many people live in that hotel?
She is spot on!

Another great diy video by Ron. The TV show is real good but, let's not also not forget This Old House Hour on PBS.
It's great and i love it

The videos are very helpful for anyone who is looking to install a front door bythemselves. My husband insisted this was one project he was going to do byhimself and so we went through all of the videos. Both of us feel pretty surethat we can do it ourselves but we’ve had some goof ups in the past with someof our DIY projects so before we do anything we are going to consult with aprofessional and then take a call especially given the security importance ofan exterior door. Installing Exterior Doors
Ron --It would be great if you could tell us how to adjust the side gaps- when they are not equal-no all installs go so smooth. Also the adds are just that paid ads --but man your killing me they would not skip when clicked all the time
Hey Ron, any tips on measuring an existing door for replacement without taking the casing off? My customers would greatly appreciate it. HDSteve.
As my wife says, "Nothing is EVER simple or easy."
Did you do it yet? How did it turn out?
Ron, thank you for this great instructional video. I am planning to replace both my front door and my sliding glass door leading to the deck. I want to replace the sliding door with a French door. Wish me luck!
Ron, you will have to be careful not to dent the steel door. One advantage of wood is that it doesn't dent. Nice looking casa there Ron!
Sand some off the bottom of the door Bro.
No Bro, just cut off two inches.
Ha ha. You said it Bob. Every thing always goes right on these videos. Maybe Ron is that good but I'm not. Every project I attempt has a blue cloud of smoke over it at one point or another. LOL!
I would like to see a video where 1. The sill is not level, 2. the door opening is not square, and 3. the margins are not even. Some homes are quickly built by contractors who get their help from the H**e D***t parking lot at 6AM. Nothing is plumb, level, or square. As long as it looks OK to the eye, it's on the market. I'd like to see every video include what to do when things aren't perfect. The 2 hour job that takes all day and requires 5 or 6 trips to the H**e D***t or L___'s to complete. Thanks
I just put in 2 new doors front & back or I should my say land lord had them put in.They did not do a good job .. Cold air come in...
What do you do when your present door is only 78" tall. I live in a pre-fab home. Most pre-hung doors are 80" tall. Width is standard. Do I have to go custom?
Is there a solution when the sill is too high and door sticks at bottom? The adjustor piece is rubber has been adjusted with screws as far as they will go. It will not go any lower and sill still is too tight.
I agree with Kenny Charles. It would be nice to see how to install the door when things arenot square, level, or plumb. Showing how to over come these problems and hang the door properly would be a great help.
Why not a coat of primer on those outside trim pieces before installing them?
Ron another choice for exterior is Fiberglass they to are energy efficientthey do not dent as easy and you can get them with a textured wood grain finish and I think they paint up better.I choose Fiberglass over Metal because of the Texture and dents.
Squaring up the door is something a lot of people have missed with these assemblies because they assume the unit is square. It can easily come out of square in transport. Fix it during the installation.Lots of good tips, Ron.
Ron, Good common sense video. I just watched it today and saved me from one critical mistake, the foil. After I measured the door opening it turns out I had to custom order the door a month in advance.
Keep up the awesome advice!
