I am looking to tile the kitchen sink's bank splash...do I need to prepare the surface in any way? There's already some type of material adhered to the wall...it seems to be laminate-type material which is very smooth and glossy. Thank you!

i noticed you didn't back butter the tiles, any reason? i back butter and find that the tiles set up stronger. some tiles are dry and suck the moisture out of the thin set before letting it set up and cure.

I just did a tile backsplash, but I used a new product called TileMat. No thinset mess, it's a sticky mat that goes on the wall (or countertop) then peel off the front cover to reveal the sticky side for the tile. I used mats of glass tile 1" x 2" with some onyz mixed in with the glass tile. The product was so much easier to use than thinset, and there was no chance of getting thinset on my new granite counters. Grout is used the same as with your project. I will never tile with thinset again (unless it's a floor, the only place you cannot use the TileMat). Next project? Tile my tub/shower surround!

I am about to undertake this project with 1" glass tiles. I was told to put on grout sealer on the tiles prior to installation to fill the minute gaps or scratches in the glass...does this sound correct? Is there another product I should be using? This, I was told, would aid in wiping clean the grout off the tiles and not leave a residue in the pits of the tiles).

My question: do you cut/place the tile under the outlet plate or do you leave the outlet and light switch plates on and tile to their edges? Thank you.
