Excellent video and I learned a lot, but the sliding door is on the outside. I thought that was a "no no" for security and safety reasons as well as slider longevity. With the slider on the outside it can be removed from the outside making it easier for someone to break in. Someone on the outside could also wedge the door with a stick making it impossible to open from the inside. Having the sliding edge on the outside also makes it subject to build up of dirt and grime due to wind and other weather. It will also be a constant cleaning problem and wear the door and it's sliding mechanism out prematurely. How do I know these things? It's the way my current sliding door is installed and I have experienced some of these problems. It has helped me break into my own house though when I've locked my keys inside.

Hi Ryan,

There are special types of mounting hardware for mounting the door directly to the steel frame but a better suggestion might be to add wood to the top header so you can mount the door to wood.

Hi Darwin,

I feel that have multiple options to each question. The professionals at your local hardware store should have several suggestions beyond mine.

1) Here is a website that talks about creating a watertight seal between metal and cement. http://www.enecon.com/prod-Ene...
2) You can find concrete anchoring screws and bolts at any hardware store.
3) If you feel the need to fill the concrete blocks with more concrete for stability then that is a viable option.

Great work, and nicely done video. A couple of comments: you may want to mention that removing the old door may reveal rot that will require additional time, and materials - particularly if the rot goes down to the sill as often occurs with connected decks. With a big hole in the house one must be prepared to finish the job as quickly as possible. And no disrespect, but shouldn't the operating door (slider) go on the inside so it can be blocked, and not on the outside as seen at 10:34 in the video?

Mr. Hazelton, Wow! This has got to be the best, most informative video outlining exactly how to uninstall and install patio sliding doors. Great job! I'm about to undertake the same project, hopefully. I shouldn't run into the slight challenge that you ran into with having to find the nails since I have a brick house so prying the moldings off should go smoothly as long as I do it gradually. My biggest concern is once the door frame is removed, I will have to make darn sure that I don't get hung up getting the new door in since this type of project obviously can't linger for days! When measuring the my existing doors to replace them, should I measure just the inside, visible areas or would I best by advised to remove all of the molding and take my measurements then to ensure that I purchase the proper size replacement door? Ron: Just curious if you could cover something that wasn't covered in this video, nor can I really find anything on it. I am installing a floating floor (Dricore) in my basement. I am, at the same time, replacing a very old patio French door and replacing it w/a new prehung French door set. But I have to cut some wood at the top of the door so the doors can be installed higher up, b/c the new doors will have to accomodate the floating floor (or the doors won't open once the carpet is installed). Any tips on what the best threshold would be underneath the threshold sill of the new patio door? Should I form up a concrete rectangle and just pour some new concrete, or glue in a marble threshold, or what? The door set is going up by 1 3/8ths inch, the thickness of the 2 x 2 I'm going to cut to get it up in the air a bit. I still have more wood at top to screw to.

I am glad I found this video, I am getting ready to up grade my door, my house was built in the early 70s, so it has a wooden door.I am going to have my wife watch this. Questions: I'll be replacing a sliding door in the next few days. The current sliding door sits directly on top of a concrete (cinder) block wall. I have the following concerns: 1) How should I create a water-tight seal under the new door frame? Will the foil-backed tape work well on top of concrete block? 2) How should I anchoring the bottom of the door frame to the concrete blocks? Masonry screws? Construction adhesive? Other? 3) When I remove the old door, I'm hoping that I will not discover that the concrete blocks are hollow. If they are, should I fill them in with concrete or something else? Thank you for providing a very helpful video!!!

Great video - thanks! I'm thinking about replacing our slider in the basement and this was a great help. Our setup is slightly different because we have a brick house. Also, there is a 1/4" thick metal header going across the top. Any tips or suggestions for dealing with this as opposed to a simple wood frame? Thank you, Ryan

Mr. Hazelton, I went through your video on how to install a sliding glass door a couple of times, and gave it a whirl today. I went through it a couple of more times while I was installing the door. Had it not been for your video, the only example I would have had was the door I took out, and it was 'hosed'. I didn't finish the project in one day (I could have, but my tape measure kept lying to me and I had some rework to do), but I did stop the north wind from coming through the hole in our house in a single day. Many thanks, I don't think I would have done this correctly without your video! My wife thanks you also!!
