How to Install a Tubular Skylight

Do you happen to have a video that talks about installing on a metal roof that looks like spanish tile? Also, it would be great if you included some measuring tips and mentioned sealing the flashing properly (the video shows no sealant being used, etc..) as this is something that a novice would likely miss to great detriment.

Ron~ I look forward to your tips. Often, I can apply a building step from one project to incorporate in other projects. Regarding the Skylight, I'm left wondering if there should have been a bit more done on top of the roof to prevent rain water from leaking into the attic. Am I correct...or...paranoid? Thanks, Ron.

Good project, Ron. I was a sub contractor for a tubular skylight company some years ago. A couple of tips . #1 Make sure you coat the back of the flashing with roofing tar before nailing & coat the nailheads, as well. Using a caulk tube type of this material makes it easy. #2 When need to make a perfect circle scribe, I first sank a 3" drywall screw into the roof from the attic side instead of using a drill bit. I then measured the diameter of the hole & divide by 2. Then using an old metal ruler, I drilled 2 holes in the ruler with the distance of the above measurement. Then I slipped one end over the screw coming through the roof & took another 3" drywall screw to scribe the circle into the shingles. #3 When attaching the interior flange, make sure at least 1 screw on each side hits a ceiling joist. Hope this helps.

I agree with Eddie, I think the bottom edge and screws penetrating the roof deck should be sealed. will be awaiting Ron's advice. Love this project and plan to do one for my wife next week in our dark hallway. Love your e-mails and TV show.

Never ever doing this myself...... dont you put a roof sealer of some sort like asphalt calking around the bottom edge of the flashing ? other than my question its a great project. keep up the good work Ron. I'm a fan or your :)
