After reviewing the video again, I also find myself asking about the lateral expansion of the planks. Since the planks will expand from side to side I would think you'd have to plan some construction feature to allow for this natural movement. If you screw the batten boards across each plank, then the plank movement will be checked and thus lead to the wood cracking. Cracks in the woods would also lead to cracks in the paint which would allow moisture in and a quick demise to the shutters. Would it not have been better to cut slots in the batten boards to allow the screws to move with the wood expansion? What am I missing here that would allow the shutters in the video to be sound? Surely they weren't meant to be temporary.

Although I was pleased to find this video on DIY shutters, it was sure lacking on necessary details. Can anyone help file in the blanks? I'd like more detailed instructions myself! How wide and thick are the fir planks? How deep are the tongue, grooves and rabbets? How large is the bead cut? Also how how do we hinge them to a brick surround, as I suppose that requires specialty hinges, closure hooks, and "tie back" hooks for when they are open. Where do we purchase those?

Great and informative video. Would you like to come to France and help my husband and I out with our shutters?! Believe it or not, we can't find the shutters we need to complete our house. The original shutters are from around the 1970's or so and they were made from exotic African wood. The tongue and grove style that we have no longer exist here. We are having the hardest time trying to get a shutter made for one of the existing ones that is no longer good. Everyone is telling us that we will have to go to an artisan that specializes in making them and it will be a special order. Well, we tried that and to get a perfect match the guy wanted 640 Euros! For one shutter. Unfortunately we don't have a table saw or router like you have and here in France, where everything is over the top expensive and very difficult to find, we would probably spend that much or more on just getting set up! If you know anywhere in France where I can find what I need that would be a great help or like I said, come on down to the sunny south of France for a visit!

Since I only have dial-up it's not possible for me to view your videos without waiting half the day for it to load. Diagrams and step-by-step instructions would help a lot. You have some things that I would like to do, but do not have the expertise to do them. Please help. Thank you.

I failed to see any latches on these shutters. Nothing to hold them open nor to hold them closed. I would expect that in order to be effective against the hurricanes that are common to the New Orleans area, they would have to have some quite substantial latches to hold the shutters closed.

I agree with the previous comment. Very nice shutters, but pdf plans would be very cool. PS I live 40 miles from the French Quarter and will soon begin my own shutter project.
