Not enough water circulation.. Goldfish can live in pretty stagnant water, which, makes them hardy.. Increase water movement & the larvae will die..

Would have recommended adding the info concerning the need for electricity, pumps and piping that are required. Also, testing and chemicals required to ensure pond water is capable of supporting fish long term. A little misleading, in the sense that the finished pond appeared to be only a few days of work.

I purchased a house that has two fish ponds. Had to have a tree cut down and I lost some fish because the water got too hot from all the sun. Also cleaned it out 4 times this year because of the algae and the temp. I emptied that one and put the fish in the lower pond. Maybe I will start it up in the fall when it is not quite so hot. I love the calming water sound and watching the gold fish. Yes herron do love fish.

I live in NE Ohio near the Lake. I very seldom have "any" mosquitos. I have a 5X8' pond and about 32 goldfish and lilypads and never have had a problem with mosquitos. I wonder if it's due to trees you may have around? Also, toads and frogs keep the mosquitos away and I don't have but a "few" of those at various times. Maybe more fish would help OR it's other surroundings that draw TOO MANY mosquitos.

I live 4 miles from Lake Erie, in Eastern Ohio and have had a pond for over 13 years. It's about 5X8 and center is bout 24" deep down to 22" deep around outer water area. In summer, I have water pump in pond for about 500 gal pump ability. Under $90 . Water cascade over rocks this year but used a cememt aligator to spew water out of his mouth previously. FOR WINTER: I take the hose away from aligator and just pond pump running and hose connected to it that I let flow about 5" above the outside rocks and into the pond to keep a "hole" open for fish. The only time I lost any of my goldfish; 3" to 9" long, was when power was out for extended period of time. They are all still there and start coming up as soon as all ice on pond is gone and milder weather approaches. The only filter I have is into the pump system....no buried filter. One day, I'll maybe get one. Good luck. I love my pond!

Thanks Ron. I now have 112 of your Projects in a folder. My husband is retiring at the end of this year and boy is he going to be busy!!
One question on this project. We live in Ontario, Canada, how deep does the pond have to be to keep the fish OK in the Winter.

Shade or sun? My experience is that some sun is good -- it seems to be beneficial to the aquatic plants. However, too much sun can promote algae growth, elevate water tempertures and speed up evaporation. My pond is situated under a tree, but gets 2 - 3 hours of sunlight a day. On the other hand, I have seen some terrific ponds that had no shade. I suspect there are no real rules for this, but the selection of plants probably has to take sunlight into consideration. One thing I do know, my fish love to hang out under the shade of a lily pad. I suspect they also feel more secure since they're out of site of flying predators.

Good question. Some of each is probably best. Sunlight is necessary for plant growth which you need for a healthy, well-balanced pond ecosystem. Too much sun, though, can over-stimulate algae growth, cause excessive evaporation and, possibly, in extreme cases elevate water temperatures higher than might be desirable.
