How to Magnetize and De-Magnetize a Common Screwdriver

Sometimes, having a magnetic screwdriver is very helpful: when driving a screw into wood, for example. Other times, though, such as when working in a metal cabinet, it can make a task more difficult.

The good news is that you can magnetize and demagnetize almost any screwdriver by using a household magnet.

To magnetize a screwdriver, place the magnet on the base of the shaft and pull the screwdriver along the magnet until it slides away from the tip.

Now, ferrous (iron-based) metal screws can be picked up with ease.

To demagnetize, simply reverse the process. Place the tip of the screwdriver on the edge of the magnet and push it forward.

General Tool also makes a little device to do the same thing. One side of the tool magnetizes a screwdriver, and the other removes the magnetic charge.

Magnetic tools can be a very easy and attractive option!
