Harvesting Granite with a Diamond Necklace

Massive Blocks of White Granite are Cut from an Underground Mountain in the Most Amazing Way

Two men standing at granite quarry

Just a few miles from Winston-Salem, lies one of the largest exposed white granite deposits in the world.  Prized for its light color, this stone is shipped all over the world as a favorite material for large buildings.  The deposit itself is some two miles in diameter, but the granite must be removed in blocks weighing up to White granite floor and countertop with floating stairs 300,000 pounds.  The way in which these massive cubes of stone are cleaved from the mother lode surprised me and I bet it will you, too.
