Paint Storage

Old stored paint

Over time, a small amount of paint stored in a large container can get pretty dried out. If left that way long enough, it becomes totally unusable. Also, when paint is stored in its original container, it is difficult to remember which paint goes where.

Ron has come up with a great solution for safely storing leftover paint.
The key to paint storage is to minimize the amount of air in the container. So plastic water bottles of all different sizes are perfect for keeping leftover paint in good condition. Simply match the size of the bottle with the amount of leftover paint that you have.

A roll of masking tape keeps the bottle from tipping and a paper towel will catch any drips. If the paint has a lot of loose debris, you may want to put a paint filter inside the funnel. Once the paint is in the bottle, remove the funnel and drop about six marbles into the paint. Label the bottle using a permanent felt tipped marker

When it comes time to do a touch up, simply give the bottle a shake and those marbles in the bottom will agitate and mix the paint. Then simply open the top, pour out what you need, close the top again, and do your touchup. When the paint level gets about halfway down in the bottle, transfer the remaining paint to a smaller one.
