Ron, the house I just bought has a deck with a solid stain on it. How do I prep that for it's renew.. Do I have to sand it all off if I want to change the color?? Thanks

As a painting contractor, I know a lot about decks, and what you need to do to make 'em last. These are maintanance items. 2 years is a long time in the life of a deck. Less is more when giving 1 a coating. Stick with brand names that've proven themselves over the years. I don't think Ron here wants to poison and or make anybody ill/sick or hurt our dear mommy earth with any solutions. When used properly they're fine. Most everything is topical on a deck due to the pounding it takes. I'm old school. I like semi-trans oils for their withering away properties. Just wash, lather, rinse, repeat.

Your video was Very helpful. I would like a lighter stain for the finishing touch rather than the darker stain you used. Any suggestions? Just a Tint of color ~ not translucent and not very dark. Thank you for all your emails. I treasure all of them!

Ron, I thought I would encourage viewers to clean their decks using environmentally safe components. This year we used products obtained from Ecohaus. The product line is called Biowash and it is manufactured in Australia. First we wetted the deck, then disolved their "Stain Prep" in water which we applied to the deck using a roller (although you can use a sprayer to apply it as well). We then power washed the deck. Afterwards we used their stain oil product to finish the deck. I think it makes the deck look just as good if not better than the results you got without harming the environment. Check it out.

Hi Ron, I have a cedar deck and I have to clean it every year. I have use Thompson but I wasn't happy with the results. I have used Cabot which is for redwoods such as Cedar but it never penetrated, it just layed on the surface. This past spring I used a product called Penofin and it is also made for redwood such as Cedar. I like it the best out of all the products I have used. Do you have a recomendation for a product to use for cleaning Cedar decks? My deck looks great for a few weeks then it starts to look dirty and ugly again. I also would like to know if you can recomend a brush for when I clean the deck, I know Cedar is a soft wood and can easily be damaged and a soft brush that is safe for the wood but also cleans. I have to clean and restain our deck, side porch and front porch every year. The original owners told we had to use Sikkens and it doesn't last. Now I used a semi opaque from Cabot on the back deck and side porch and it seems to be holding up better. Now I have to do the large front porch and it is huge. Hopefully this will last longer. Our house is log sided and it really needs to be done also. Should I use the same product?

well how can you keep the web out of your basement you no longer get them down there back up again and we been getting big black and brown spider up in the livingroom and kitchern area they must come up from the heater reister on the floor now in this book you can order this stuff for this i was going to try it but i didn't yet also why are you not on no more on wneptv 16 i love watching your show now i can't see your show.deb

i've cleaned and painted the deck before. now there is the new product that leaves a type of "vinyl webbing" coating on the deck. is this better than cleaning/sealing/painting every couple of years? thank you.

I watched your video on deck cleaning, brightening and sealing. It was very informative but what is the best way to protect my vinyl siding that is right up against my decking. Also in the past when I apply the seal coat I get overlapping marks no matter how hard I try not to. My deck is 12 ft. wide by 40 ft. long with an L-shape on one end. One whole side is against the vinyl siding. Thanks, John Breitling

I read the wood renew project. I have a wooden picnic table that I had to replace 3 of top boards on. My question is this: Can I use the same kind of products to make the boards look more uniform, and since I have already replaced the new boards, can I still do this. Thank you, Martha
