Jerry and Aubrey, I think the foam block is necessary because the sandpaper has to take the negative shape of the moulding in order to fit onto it. Try flipping a piece of moulding onto itself to see if I'm correct. It should not fit.

I love it. Another great idea. I always hated using the edge of a sanding block to get to those difficult nooks and crannies. I like Jerry Daggett's idea in that a block of wood should last longer holding the shape. Daryl Collins ideas to pour the body filler into the pattern is pretty good too. I would use a piece of plastic wrap to allow the pattern to hold and keep the body filler from sticking to the moulding. If you can get your hands on a few scrap pieces of moulding, you can make a few templates. Thanks again.
