You know one way you can add a lot of interest to an otherwise plain tile backsplash like this is by incorporating accent tiles like these. But you know what, actually these are not accent tiles, they're plain tiles onto which have been placed these appliques.
Now this is my friend Sheila Freeman. Good to see you again.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Great, Ron.
RON HAZELTON:
Thanks for coming by.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Thank you.
RON HAZELTON:
She's with a company called Idea Sticks and they make these appliques. You know, what is it that makes these look so realistic? They even feel realistic.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Ron, it's the color, it's the depth and it's the texture.
RON HAZELTON:
Now, what kind of material do you make these out of that you can get that sort of effect?
SHEILA FREEMAN:
This is actually a rubber resin.
RON HAZELTON:
How do these stand up then to cleaners and hot grease and stuff like that?
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Any standard household cleaner will clean this beautifully. If this is used as a backsplash for a cooktop, any of the grease that splatters will not hurt the product.
RON HAZELTON:
Well, I'd like to see you put one up. Which one do you want to do?
SHEILA FREEMAN:
I'll let you pick.
RON HAZELTON:
Okay. Well, there's a lot to choose from. You've got a lot of scenes. Uhh, okay, I think I like this one. This one is a — sort of a French cafe scene, right?
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Yes, it is.
RON HAZELTON:
Chez Geraldine. Okay.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
That's what it is, okay.
RON HAZELTON:
Putting up these murals is as easy as peel and stick. In fact, they go on so easily that you can change them to echo the seasons or complement your decor.
[MUSIC]
The appliques leave no residue when they're removed and can be re-used again and again.
Now you're saying this will stand up to any household cleaner.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Any household cleaner.
RON HAZELTON:
Even something like this.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Even something like that.
RON HAZELTON:
All right. Mind if I do a test here?
[BOTH SPEAK AT ONCE]
SHEILA FREEMAN:
Be my guest.
RON HAZELTON:
Right, get a bit of this on. Oops, some of the glue's coming on.
SHEILA FREEMAN:
I don't think so.
RON HAZELTON:
[LAUGHS] So you could do this as many times as you wanted to?
SHEILA FREEMAN:
As many times and you have no fear that you're going to damage the surface.
RON HAZELTON:
That's pretty impressive.
So if you're bored with your backsplash, now you can turn that plain tile into something picturesque.
